Ageusia

Ageusia is loss of the tongue's taste functions; the inability to detect specific taste like sweetness, sourness, bitterness, saltiness, and umami (the taste of monosodium glutamate). Humans detect taste with taste receptor cells. These are clustered in taste buds. We do not actually taste with our taste bud. The taste buds are chemoreceptors, meaning that they transduce, or translate, chemical signals in food into electrical signals in the body. These electrical signals, called action potentials, travel to the brain via the nervous system, allowing us to experience the sensation of taste. The sensation of taste, like all sensations, resides in the brain, so it is the activation of hard-wired neurons that determines the sensation of taste, not the molecules nor the receptors themselves.

Essentially taste buds send signals to the brain and the brain cross references its files with emotional issues related to the taste at hand as well as chemical balance levels. For example salt might taste good, but when the body has enough, it suddenly doesn't taste as good. Each taste bud has a pore that opens out to the surface of the tongue enabling molecules and ions taken into the mouth to reach the receptor cells inside (see photo). A single taste bud contains 50-100 taste cells representing all 5 taste sensations (so the classic textbook pictures showing separate taste areas on the tongue are wrong).

The tongue can only indicate texture and differentiate between sweet, sour, bitter, salty, and umami. Most of what is perceived as the sense of taste is actually derived from smell. Ageusia is sometimes confused for as anosmia, loss of the sense of smell. Hypogeusia is partial loss of taste while Dysgeusia is distortion or alteration of taste.

Causes include: Tobacco abuse, Otologic surgery, Drug side effects, Anxiety Disorder, Tissue damage to nerves in the tongue, Vitamin deficiency (Vit. B3 and Zinc) and Neurological disorders such as Multiple Sclerosis. If you have had surgery, there is very little we can do. If you have had heavy tobacco use, please add that remedy to your protocol. Also, go to your local health food store and get some Zinc lozenges. Suck on 2-6 of those each day for at least two months while doing the protocol on the right.

This Remedy includes Aldosterone, which is known to increase the salt receptors, as well as sodium and calcium as they are part of the salt receptors in taste. Leptin, as required for sweet receptors. Glutamic acid, required for umami taste receptors, and Vitamin B3 and Zinc. Health of the intestines, particularly large intestine govern the sense of taste (five element theory).

NOTE: You can purchase Kava-Kava in tea form. Drink at least 2 times a day. You can also mix 24 grams of the cassia pulp with 250 ml hot milk and use as a mouthwash to help reinitiate taste receptors.

Age Spots

The term 'age spots', or lentigines, refers to the brownish spots that, over time appear on your face and body as a result of overexposure to the sun, or that is what you have been told, right? Our skin has what is called 'melanin pigment' which absorbs sunlight and helps naturally protect our skin from UV rays. There are a couple different types of brown spots that people get on their skin. There are solar lentigos (age spots) and freckles (known as ephiledes). These often come from the sun and that's because the sun damages the melanocytes, which are the cells in the epidermis (the skin's surface layer) that produce melanin pigment.

Tan skin is not healthy skin. A tan is our body's way of telling us our skin has been damaged, and its attempt to protect itself from further damage. As we undergo UVA and UVB light exposure from the sun's rays or from tanning beds, we are damaging our skin, which will lead to age spots (solar lentigines), sun spots, liver spots, poikiloderma (reddish-brown areas of discoloration) and melasma (mottled brownish areas).

Most of the cells in our epidermis are skin cells that form the dead skin layer as well as keratin that protects us from the outside world, but one in every tenth or twentieth cell is a melanocyte which produces melanin pigment and transfers this brown pigment to our skin cells to help protect us against the sun. Dark-skinned people do a much better job of protecting themselves from the sun because they naturally have higher melanin. Estrogen and progesterone imbalance can contribute indirectly to spot formation as well. If an age spot changes color or consistency or begins itching or burning it may be moving into malignancy.

So does the sun really cause sun spots, age spots and skin cancer? The quick answer is, Nope! I do not believe the sun causes age spots. It contributes to it, but the underlying cause is calcium that comes out of solution in the body and accumulates in the skin pigment. When these areas are exposed to too much sun or UV rays it browns the now solidified calcium. Did you ever wonder why you get 'spots' and don't just become one large spot in all burned areas? In the alternative health world the age spots are more accurately termed liver spots because they are associated with liver congestion or toxicity. One research study showed that severe age spots evident on the hands and arms were indicators of chronic congestion in the circulatory system around the brain. Skin issues always reflect deeper issues, the sun is just a contributor, not the cause. That said, any sun exposure that causes burn is toxic for the body. Sunscreens are not healthy so it is best to use hats and clothing to cover the skin past the point of light pink color.

HOME REMEDY: You can find all kinds of home remedies for removing age spots on the internet. From applying honey to rubbing raw onion all over them. The one thing I have seen work consistently is lemon. Taking a small slice of real lemon and rubbing it into the spots twice a day. A proven remedy for age spots is Aloe Vera. Buy a plant and keep it in your bathroom. Break off a small piece daily and rub the juice over your age spots. Remember that long term those spots mean you have calcium that is out of solution, it has crystallized. What you see on the outside is a symptom of what is going on inside the body. Use our Vitamin D3 daily to help break up crystalized calcium. SunscreensSunscreens are more harm than good long term, and can contribute to the problem, which is why it is listed as the detox. In addition, the Lemonade Cleanse is amazing. The results are cumulative because it is having to remove plaque from the inside of your circulatory system and brain, remember? So do the Lemonade Cleanse every two months until you are where you want. Give this program a year and you will be notably different, inside and out.

NOTE: If you suspect a skin spot may be cancerous, which may be the fact if it is quite dark, raised, begins to change color or itch, you may apply the C-Herb to the spot. If there is any cancer cells in the area, the C-Herb will pull them out and keep them from spreading or metastasizing. PLEASE do not use on the face as it can leave serious scarring.

Addison’s Disease

Addison's disease occurs when the adrenal glands do not produce enough of the hormone cortisol and, in some cases, the hormone aldosterone (from the kidney). The disease is also called adrenal insufficiency, or hypocortisolism. It occurs in all age groups and afflicts men and women equally. The disease is characterized by weight loss (loss of appetite), muscle weakness, chronic fatigue, low blood pressure, crave salty foods and sometimes darkening of the skin (see photo) in both exposed and nonexposed parts of the body. 50% of the time a person will notice nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. It is considered an autoimmune disorder where the immune system makes antibodies that attack and slowly destroy the adrenal cortex. Adrenal insufficiency occurs when 90% of the cortex has been destroyed. Sometimes only the adrenal gland is affected, as in idiopathic adrenal insufficiency; sometimes other glands also are affected, as in the polyendocrine deficiency syndrome.

Because cortisol is so vital to health, the amount of cortisol produced by the adrenals is precisely balanced. Like many other hormones, cortisol is regulated by the brain's hypothalamus and the pituitary gland. First, the hypothalamus sends "releasing hormones" to the pituitary gland. One of the pituitary's main functions is to secrete ACTH (adrenocorticotropin), a hormone that stimulates the adrenal glands. When the adrenals receive the pituitary's signal in the form of ACTH, they respond by producing cortisol.

Aldosterone, also produced by the adrenal glands, helps maintain blood pressure and water and salt balance in the body by helping the kidney retain sodium and excrete potassium. When aldosterone production falls too low, the kidneys are not able to regulate salt and water balance, causing blood volume and blood pressure to drop. Because the symptoms progress slowly, they are usually ignored until a stressful event like an illness or an accident causes them to become worse. This is called an addisonian crisis, or acute adrenal insufficiency. In most cases, symptoms are severe enough that people seek medical treatment before a crisis occurs. However, in about 25 percent of patients, symptoms first appear during an addisonian crisis. Left untreated, an addisonian crisis can be fatal.

  • Symptoms of an addisonian crisis include:
  • sudden penetrating pain in the lower back, abdomen, or legs
  • severe vomiting and diarrhea
  • dehydration
  • low blood pressure
  • loss of consciousness

Causes of Addison's Disease include: tuberculosis, infections (particularly fungal), metastatic tumor, long term use of anti-inflammatory steroids like prednisone and surgical removal of adrenal gland, hypothalamus or pituitary.

NOTE: If you have had any of these glands removed, you may use the remedies listed with no negative side effect, but I am not sure they will do what you seek. The remedies are designed to work with the body. When parts are missing, that task becomes difficult. If you still have all your body parts, Use the protocol listed, but you may also need to find a natural supplement called an Adrenal Glandular to go with it.

Addiction

Addiction is defined as the continued use of a mood altering substance or behavior despite adverse consequences. The consequence does not have to be a physical health hazard as induced by cigarettes, alcohol abuse, drug abuse, etc. Your addiction may be causing you stress at a level that will eventually create psychological or neurological issues, which often manifest physically as chronic pain, fibromyalgia, dementia, autoimmune disease, etc. Perhaps a bit more accurate description for addiction should be, "Anything that impairs control over a substance, behavior or preoccupation." When you see it this way, in all likelihood, we all have one addiction or another, probably several. Maybe going to the gym is your addiction, or that next tattoo, or having to dress in the designer clothes, perhaps have the best car or making a certain amount of money, even religion can become an addiction.

Do you eat healthy as a general principle, or is it so strict and rigid that you do it because you fear the consequence of an un healthy lifestyle? Does the way you appear, act, behave, or come across to others in any feed your ego? Anything that preoccupies your time, your money, energy, emotion, even your thoughts, is an addiction. Wow! I think we all have this disorder, but you will see why below.

The opposite of addiction is to be in the moment and have no judgment about any person, thing, or circumstance. When you no longer try to control the outcome, when you can simply BE in the moment and participate in life rather than control any particular outcome, you have conquered all addiction. One of the problems with addiction is that no matter what your particular addiction is, you have probably found a way to rationalize it so you believe it to be a positive attribute. For example, you are always working, always thinking about that next deal, that next sale, but it is not an addiction because it is working toward retirement, or it is to supply for your family. In the proverbial 20/20 hindsight, do you think your children are better off with the latest gadgets because you had money, or would they have been better off with more of your time instead?

If you spend so much time and money trying to look just right, having the designer brands so you can impress, well, whomever it is, but what does it really gain you long term? Stress! If you can't leave the house dirty to take your kids to the park, or sit and read them a story, or just take a nap because you have worked hard all week and your body is more important than the task, what does that priority issue gain you long term? Stress! What are the real priorities in life, or better yet, what pain are you masking? For all addictions, from the small ones to the life threatening ones, are developed to self soothe some old emotional pain.

Our psychological profile is set by the time we are 7 years old. Keep in mind that this does not mean you were abused per se, our mental profile was set by the perception of what you thought was true or real. If we did not receive the love, time or acceptance as a child, we develop ways to control that and try to fulfill it. That is the root of your addiction. Talk therapy, psychology, AA meetings, rehab, none of these are going to help fix that root. Medication and antidepressants certainly do not contribute to a cure. They may help you cope, but if you do not heal the old emotional pain that drove you to that addiction, you will never truly heal.

Every emotional pain creates an actual chemical response in your brain and our addictions literally create chemical responses to satisfy the illusion of happiness. From drug addict, to neat freak, to OCD to workaholic to religious fanatic, they are all symptoms of chemical responses induced to help us cope with the side effect of the original pain mechanism. While the psychological profile (old emotional pain) is different for each person, the chemicals responsible for any addiction are almost always neurotransmitters in some combination. Those are very often additionally disrupted by the childhood vaccines that most people have recieved. And so I offer you the listed protocol to help. The Super Nutrient is listed to provide essential vitamins and minerals needed for what has surely become depleted.

In addition (a very important addition), one of the best things to regain emotion control is fasting. Beyond that, start with books and teachings by Wayne Dyer, Eckhart Tolle and teachers along that line that help bring awareness to our inner selves.

ADD/ADHD

The exact definition of what makes up attention deficit disorder (ADD) is a controversial topic. It seems as though every medical professional has a different definition of what this disease is. But, almost everyone can agree on the fact that it is based on both psychological and physiological factors, and it affects the subject's ability to concentrate, complete tasks and live a normal everyday life. Think of ADD as mild mannered, concentration issues, mind wanders and has a hard time memorizing. Don't mistake that for stupid now, many, if not most ADD kids have higher than average intelligence. The problem is that their learning style is different than the common teaching styles. The ADD child is often bored, that is why his mind seems to wander and he doesn't pay attention. The kids aren't always the problem, parents should keep this in mind. A child should not be expected to sit like a robot and cause no problems. A child is naturally inquisitive and does want to learn, so finding the child's learning style may be of big help.

ADD is often confused or used interactively with ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder). These are the cases that generally do need some help. Someone with ADHD often has difficulty with concentration, mental focus, and inhibition of impulses and behaviors are chronic and pervasive and impair an individual's daily functioning across various settings -- home, school or work, in relationships, etc. Medicine calls it a neurologically based disorder, but what causes that? There are several things to consider.

  1. There was a reaction to one or more of the vaccinations the child has had. Many children have allergic reactions that literally interfere with neurological functions. Autism was not a prevalent issue until childhood vaccinations came along. The detoxification of vaccines and the horrible chemicals that come with them may be needed. The vaccine detox along with the appropriate metal detox may be needed.
  2. Previous trauma to the head might be involved. From a nasty bicycle accident to being dropped as a child to a traumatic birth where they had to use forceps .. any of these can play a role. If you suspect this, use the trauma Remedy.
  3. Food allergies, or more accurately reactions to colors, preservatives and foods a person should not eat anyway, so diet may be a big part of this. Red dye, like the stuff found in ketchup is almost always a huge trigger. Get this child off of junk foods. Once the problem is to this point, there is very likely a dairy and or gluten allergy. But start by eliminating junk foods, colors, preservatives, feed them organic food.
  4. Genetics, it is true that a child with ADHD often has a parent that had those tendencies. If one of the parents had the tendency, use the RNA/DNA Remedy.
  5. Neurological development, meaning the brains ability to use its multifaceted functions all at once may be an issue. This is often the case of a child did not crawl normally or was not allowed to do all the movements a baby does involuntarily, which is all a huge part of brain development and reintegration. A Brain Gym practitioner might be able to help find some exercises to reintegrate the neurological system
  6. These kids need structure and they often feel rejected subconsciously. Maybe they were an unintended pregnancy and they felt that from the womb .. try to make this child feel loved, wanted and supported.

Acne

All types of acne – blackheads, whiteheads, pimples, papule, pustules, nodules and cysts – develop when pores in our skin become clogged. The culprit is sebum [see-bum], an oil in our skin. Our bodies make more sebum when our hormones surge. This is why teens get acne. This is why women often breakout before their periods. Allergies and intestinal problems can lead to excess sebum as well.

What happens inside the clogged pore determines the type of acne we see. A blackhead appears when sebum and dead skin cells clog the pore. While the pore is clogged, its surface remains open. This lets us look into the pore and see a black color.

A whitehead forms when the excess oil and dead skin cells clog the pore and block the opening of the pore. Acne develops where we have the most sebaceous glands. These glands make sebum and are found in the greatest number on our face, neck, chest, back, shoulders, and upper arms.

But excess oil does more than clog pores. Bacteria that normally live on our skin, P. acnes, thrive in this excess oil. Immersed in excess oil, the bacteria can rapidly increase in number. As the bacteria multiply in a clogged pore, the pore becomes inflamed. Inflammation is what causes a pimple to look red, hot, and swollen. When inflammation reaches deep into the skin, an acne cyst forms. This is the most severe type of acne. Cysts can be very painful. If pustule, nodule or cystic acne is not corrected it can lead to severe acne known as Acne Conglobata (vulgaris), Acne Fulminans, Gram Negative Folliculitis, Nodulocystic Acne.

NOTE: Acne is not really a skin problem, the skin is the side effect, the symptom of the deeper issue. Constipation! Show me a person with acne and I give you a person with too much accumulated waste in their system. If the bowels are not evacuating at least twice a day, consider some Bowel Stimulant. If you tend to eat too much junk food, use the IC-2 to clean out some waste. Yes, Proactive and various facial washes / treatments may help, but stop them and see what happens. Why? Because you didn’t fix the cause. Since hormones fluctuate in the years leading up to menopause, many women in their 40s and 50s get acne. Is it just the hormones? No. Why do other women have no skin problems? When hormones surge, the liver is in charge of cleaning the excess away. The person with liver congestion is the one who gets the acne.

Acid Reflux

At the entrance to your stomach is a valve, which is a ring of muscle called the lower esophageal sphincter (LES). Normally, the LES closes as soon as food passes through it. If the LES doesn’t close all the way or if it opens too often, acid produced by your stomach can move up into your esophagus. This can cause symptoms such as a burning chest pain called heartburn, it can cause regurgitation, bloating, burping or hiccups that don’t let up. If acid reflux (heartburn) symptoms happen more than twice a week, they call it acid reflux disease, or gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).

People use antacids believing they will help; well, they do tend to calm it temporarily, but it may be making the problem worst long term. This is true in part because the calcium is inorganic in form (an unhealthy form) but also the stomach is supposed to be acid by nature. You don’t want to reduce the amount of acid; you just need to keep it from coming out of the stomach into the esophagus. The other issue here is that the symptoms of too much acid and too little acid in the stomach are the same. Believe it or not, most people with acid reflux don’t have enough acid, just opposite of what most people think.

Traditionally speaking acid reflux can be caused by:

  1. Pregnancy can put pressure in the intestines contributing to hiatal hernia.
  2. Smoking
  3. Foods such as alcohol, carbonated beverages, chocolate, citrus fruit, coffee or tea, fatty or fried foods, foods containing tomato, spaghetti sauce, salsa or pizza, garlic and onions, mint, spicy foods, being overweight, eating a heavy meal and laying on your back, snacking close to bedtime, muscle relaxers or blood pressure meds.

No matter what seems to “trigger” your acid reflux, the real cause is the lower intestine. You probably have a hiatal hernia (please see that category), which is often caused by inflammation of the bowel, the lower intestine. I can almost guarantee the body is too acidic. The long term fix is to get the body more alkaline, eliminate acid forming foods. Google a list of acid vs. alkaline foods. Start eating as many raw fruits and veggies as you can and take at least 2 Digestive Aid with every meal. If you are not pooping at least twice a day, start the IC-1 to assure you are getting a good fiber intake.

Home remedyNo matter what the cause, if you have this, you surely want relief! Since most people have too little acid, the most common fix is apple cider vinegar. Bragg’s is the best name brand, but if you can’t find it, any apple cider vinegar will do. How much depends on the person. Between a teaspoon and tablespoon is generally about right. You can take it straight or put it in some water and drink it down. The relief is very quick! If you can’t find the vinegar, put ½ teaspoon of Baking Soda in a few ounces of cold water and drink that down. If for some strange reason you really do make too much stomach acid, the apple cider vinegar will not help a bit, it may even irritate you some. You should try Aloe Vera juice at the same dose.

Acidosis

When talking about pH (potential hydrogen) the scale goes from 0-14, with 0 being acidic and 7 being neutral moving to 14 which is alkaline. In human health, we need to consider urine pH, saliva pH and blood pH. Blood pH has a normal range of 7.35-7.45. Anything outside that range is considered dangerous and life threatening. Compared to the overall scale, that is a pretty small window. Urine and saliva ranges are much more forgiving. Acidosis of the blood is the topic here, please refer to Acid Reflux and pH monitoring in the Blog section for more on acidity.

People most likely to get acidic blood include those with impaired breathing conditions, or with kidney or liver damage. Essentially the body makes more acid than it can get rid of, resulting in acidosis. In respiratory acidosis, the body is unable to get rid of carbon dioxide in appropriate amounts causing carbon dioxide build-up. Someone with persistent hyperventilation could briefly become acidotic, and various lung diseases or lung impairment may result in the condition. Sometimes being on a respirator in a hospital for long periods of time might result in respiratory or pulmonary versions of this condition, which is why those on respirators have blood gases checked regularly.

Other things that may cause acidic blood levels include starving the body and scuba diving. Certain poisons may result in an acidotic state too, opioids (sedative narcotics) and strong sleeping pills can cause acidosis. Some conditions, especially diabetes, are indicators in causing this condition, and when untreated, it may progress to what is called metabolic acidosis. The symptoms of metabolic forms of this condition can include deep, rapid breathing, chest pain, pain in the bones, muscle weakness and ultimately arrhythmias, coma, seizure or drastic reduction in blood pressure.

One common type of acidosis seen in those with diabetes type I is ketoacidosis. Lack of insulin can cause the body to break down abnormal amounts of fats resulting in the body building up ketones and extra acid. These can change blood pH level and raise blood glucose levels.

Home remedyThere is no home test for blood acidity. Dial 911 if a person is showing any signs of incoherence or blood pressure is very low. Sometimes people with severe acidosis require intravenous (IV) sodium bicarbonate to quickly bring blood back to normal acid levels, but you will need medical assistance for this. If the issue is related to lack of insulin, such as a diabetic, the use of insulin should correct the issue. If the acidosis is from prolonged liver or kidney damage, or from hyperventilation, take sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) to reduce acid levels. Drink 1 teaspoon mixed in a few ounces of cold water. Repeat in 45 minutes and again after two hours. Continue ½ teaspoon of aluminum free baking soda three times a day for several weeks if needed.

You may also consider Elderberry (herb): Steep 3 to 5 grams of dried Elder flowers in 1 cup of boiling water for ten minutes. Drink 1 cup 3 times daily.

Abscess

Abscess (Carbuncles & Boils)

An abscess is a collection of pus (dead neutrophils) that has accumulated in a cavity formed by the tissue in which the pus resides. They are usually caused by bacteria, parasites or other foreign materials (e.g., splinters, bullet wounds, or injecting needles). An abscess is a defensive reaction of the tissue to prevent the spread of infectious materials to other parts of the body (making it a good thing, but tell that to the pain it causes!) The bacteria/parasites (or foreign materials) kill the local cells, resulting in the release of cytokines. The cytokines trigger an inflammatory response, which draws large numbers of white blood cells to the area and increases the regional blood flow.

The cardinal symptoms and signs of any kind of inflammatory process are redness, heat, swelling, pain and loss of function. Abscesses may occur in any kind of solid tissue but occur most frequently on skin surfaces, where they may be superficial pustules (boils) or deep skin abscesses. But they can also form in the lungs, brain, teeth, kidneys and tonsils.

Left unresolved, major complications can occur, including spreading of the abscess material to adjacent or remote tissues and extensive regional tissue death (gangrene). An abscess will begin to heal once it has drained in most cases. You cannot lance a boil until the head is soft. Pricking (lancing) the white or yellow head (but wait until there is a head) with a sterile needle is recommended. Squeezing is NOT recommended as it can push infected debris through tissue back into the blood and it can also promote scaring. Natural drainage is the best solution, let the body perform the miracle.

If the head of the abscess is hard, like you see in the photo, make a paste of IC-2 and Liquid Detox and wrap it over the area. You can add a dab of Healing Salve if you need to keep it as a paste. The IC-2 and Liquid Detox will draw the toxins to the surface and help the boil soften and come to a head so you can lance it for drainage. Once a boil is lanced and begins to drain, Liquid Detox can be applied to a band aid or bandage and applied over the abscess to initiate healing and keep the site from re-infecting. If the abscess appears as an open wound, pack it with Healing Salve to help it heal quickly and with the least scaring.

If your abscess is in a tooth, take some of the Healing Salve and mix it with equal parts of IC-2 and pack it between the cheek and the tooth with the abscess. This will help draw the infection out of the tooth. If there is pain in the tooth, take a piece of ice and rub it along the web between the thumb and pointer finger.
